I know what you mean, I stumbled across that odd section the other day but can't remember the label! Perhaps it's something in development?

...Open Source Media?

Hey, that's weird.

http://www.archive.org/details/opensource_media
takes me somewhere, but the "See recent additions" link gives no results. At the bottom of the page it says "This forum (opensource_media) doesn't exist". A few files can be found by following the "Top Batting Averages" and "Most Downloaded Items". Maybe the JPGs I found were from this shadowy, ill-formed collection.

What other mysteries lie hidden at archive.org?

You can do a search for:

mediatype:"image"

and get over 12,000 results. So if you wanted to search for protest pictures, for example, you'd type this into the search box:

protest mediatype:"image"

Almost all of the images appear to be from a collection called "ourmedia," but when you click that link on the item's page it just takes you to a search for that collection - which gives you almost all of those 12,000 photos. So it doesn't look like browsing the "collection" is possible, but you can at least search it.

I may have figured it out- I just took a clue from how Tracey presents "This Just In" on the front archive.org page by screening out the http://ourmedia.org stuff with "!ourmedia". It's in the form:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=mediatype%3Aimage%20AND%20%21collection%3Aourmedia&sort=-%2Fmetadata%2Fpublicdate

...And I see one is "tracey webmaster test". Sorry if we're not supposed to be peeking behind the curtain, just nosy huh? :)
